As usual for my trip, here are the final numbers. One interesting thing to note is the increase in my gas mileage versus previous years, at more than 5 mpg. I suspect this is due to two factors: first, on this trip I exclusively ran non-ethanol gas where as on previous trips I would use ethanol (although not necessarily exclusively.) I'll spare you the diatribe on the many reasons why I chose to not run ethanol this time around, but the lower efficiency of ethanol supplemented fuel would explain some of the increase.
However, I believe the bulk of the increase is that I'm suspecting my main jet is partialy clogged.
Several weeks before the trip I noticed the bike was needing a greater amount of choke, and was taking
longer than usual to get warmed up. While descending some of the mountains on this trip, I noticed an
increase in the amount of "popping and snapping" coming from the exhaust, which is indicative of an
overly-lean condition. With the bike running lean, performance suffers but gas mileage improves.
I'm guessing I'm due to tear the carb apart and give it a good cleaning.
